08 Jan Understanding Different Types of Printer Ink
When you are choosing a printer for your office, there are several things you should consider. One of the most important factors to keep in mind is the kinds of ink that different printers use. The distinction between ink types can have big impacts on printing quality and speed, as well as maintenance costs. As you shop for a printer to rent or buy for your office, here is what you need to know about different types of printer ink.
Laser Printer Ink
Laser printers don’t actually use ink. Instead, they use toner. Toner is a powder that is heated, which allows it to fuse to the printer paper via the printer drum. Laser printers are particularly good for black and white printing. They can also print color images, though they are better at printing graphs and text, rather than images that require a lot of detail. One of the big advantages of laser printing is that the paper does not get wet during the printing process, so there is no risk of bleeding or running. Laser printers are popular in environments requiring high volume printing of primarily text documents.
Inkjet Printer Ink
Inkjet printers use liquid ink, but within this category of printers, two different inks are involved. One style of inkjet printer uses dye-based ink, in which soluble dye is dissolved in water or glycol. The other style of inkjet printer uses pigmented ink. Most home users with inkjet printers, and the majority of offices use dye-based ink, because it is cheaper, faster, and dries quickly. This kind of ink is great for details in color images and prints quality photos, especially on matte paper. The downside is that this kind of ink tends to fade within five years. Pigmented ink is usually used for professional printing of photos, art prints, and other high-end printing jobs. Pigmented ink can achieve a wide range of shades, for highly detailed results. This kind of ink is the most expensive.
